It used to be skateboards, but ever since the hoverboards or “self-balancing scooters” came out in 2015, kids are going crazy over these toys.  So hoverboards for kids, where do I start? It’s not really the flying board popularised in the Michael J Fox’s movie Back To The Future Part II.  This hoverboard does not even fly.  It’s actually a two-wheeled, motorised personal transport device that works just by using your feet.  In other words, it’s a motorised scooter with articulated boards that control the direction and speed.  Leaning forward makes it speed up and backward if you want to slow down. It also has pads on top, which you would twist to control the direction.

It was not exactly clear who really owns credit them for creating this device, but it was so awesome that every kid wished to have one on Christmas.  No wonder this scooter topped the list for the hottest selling item during the holiday season of 2015.

Thinking of buying the hoverboard you have seen online?

Before clicking the buy button online, it would be best to check out the details of your chosen hoverboard first. That is to make sure that you’re buying the right stuff for your little one.

Here are a few things that you may want to consider before buying the hoverboard:

Your kids will be the ones who will use the hoverboard.  As parents, you would only want the best for them, right?  If there’s one thing that you need to think about when buying the hoverboard, it should be safety first. To keep off the worry of risks once they ride their scooters, it would be best to ask yourself these questions first even before getting one:

Consider your child’s age when choosing a hoverboard. Ask “What type of hoverboards would be best for them?”

Considering your kid’s age is important when choosing a hoverboard.  The recommended age for kids to use a hoverboard is 6 years and higher. Young children below the recommended age may still be unable to control the force beneath these boards which may result in hurting your little one.  Also, children 6 years old up to the teenaged ones are already able to adapt and learn the operating these scooters.

Is your child’s weight appropriate for the hoverboard he/she will use?

When choosing a hoverboard for your kid, observing the maximum limit is as important as that of the minimum limits.  Hoverboards carrying more than the maximum limit can be worn out the tires faster and may not have the same speed as what you expect.  On the other hand, if your kid’s weight falls below the minimum weight, the child might not be able to control this and fall off. It would be best to check the manual or the manufacturer’s website to know exactly what the limits are.  These limits are meant to protect the rider –  your child.

Is your child ready to ride?

Consider your child’s ability to adapt before buying one. When using a hoverboard, reflexes, balance, and coordination are very important, regardless of the age.  If you think that your kid may need a longer time to learn it than others, you can still get one for them.  However, make sure that you allocate more time in guiding them on their learning curve until you are confident that they can make it on their own.

Are they already aware of the restrictions?

All kids want is to have a hoverboard and roll out to the streets alone or with their friends. However, they might not be aware of the places where hoverboards are not allowed.  Before buying them a hoverboard, it would be best to discuss with them where they are and are not allowed to use their hoverboards It includes airports, schools busy streets among other.

What do you know about the hoverboard you’re buying?

Despite the popularity of hoverboards, there are also risks that you will have to consider in regard to your child’s safety. Reports of fires caused by exploding batteries have caused a lot of concerns that the government has to recommend a recall of many of these hoverboards in order to protect the lives and properties of the consumers.  Even Amazon stopped selling these devices until the manufacturers can prove that their products are safe.

For your child’ safety, check for the certifications of these hoverboards first. Before buying the hoverboard of your choice, check if there is a UL mark on the box.  If you see the marking, it means that the brand is UL 2272 certified for safety.  It is highly recommended to only buy those brands to make sure that your kids are safe when they use it.

Also, you may want to check the quality of its components such as the tires and the articulated pads to ensure that the hoverboard would be sturdy enough for your kids to use. This would also guarantee that the hoverboard would last a long time.  Choose the ones that give you value for your money and not just for the sake of buying it for your kids.

Does the brand matter?

Deciding on the brand is an important factor to consider. When searching online for hoverboards for kids, feel free to read all the reviews which could give you a clue of how these brands are. News reports and public advisories are also great resources that can warn you about the brand names that you need to avoid.  For your child’s safety, do your homework.

Hoverboards are probably the coolest device ever invented. For your kids, it’s not only a toy but an innovative way to travel short distances or share moments with their friends. Since these scooters are personal transport devices which can take them anywhere, it is the parents’ responsibility to know how safe these are for their kids.

In addition to all the safety precautions out there, the best way to protect your kids from any risks is to know about the products beforehand.  In doing this, you can be sure that the product you are buying will be the best for them.
